In a significant update on the COVID-19 vaccination efforts, Vihiga County has demonstrated remarkable progress, with 185,000 residents turning up for the vaccination out of a target of 343,000. Vihiga Governor Hon. Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo shared this encouraging news during an address at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH) grounds, where the re-launch of the vaccination drive took place.

Addressing Misconceptions:

Governor Ottichilo acknowledged the challenges posed by misconceptions and misinformation, leading to some residents hesitating to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Despite these hurdles, he expressed gratitude to the dedicated health staff for their hard work, resulting in a commendable 54% turnout.

Continued Efforts:

Ensuring that no one is left behind, the County Boss assured that the Health Department would extend the vaccine distribution to grassroots health facilities, targeting those who missed the initial phase of vaccination.

Health PS Susan Mochache's Insights:

Health PS Susan Mochache, who presided over the re-launch, highlighted the current rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting a review of guidelines, including the emphasis on wearing face masks in public. She encouraged those fully vaccinated to consider boosters for enhanced immunity against the ongoing pandemic.

Acknowledging Achievements:

PS Mochache commended Governor Ottichilo for the notable achievements in the Health Sector, particularly in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Sensitization Efforts:

Acting CECM of Health Prof. Inonda Mwanje outlined various channels employed by the Health Department to sensitize residents, including local media stations, Community Health Volunteers (CHVs), and public gatherings.

Community Engagement:

Dr. Mary Anyienda, Chief Officer In Charge of Health Services, called on those vaccinated to play a role in informing others about the importance of vaccination and boosters, fostering a sense of community responsibility.

Health Awards Ceremony:

The event also witnessed the Vihiga County Health Awards ceremony at Equator Resort, Gambogi. Exceptional health facilities were recognized and awarded with trophies, certificates, equipment, and cash tokens for their dedicated service.

Unity in Healthcare:

The presence of County Secretary Ezekiel Ayiego, Chief Of Staff James Otari, Partners led by USAID and Afya Ugavi, alongside various County Government of Vihiga staff, showcased a united front in the ongoing battle against the pandemic.

As Vihiga County continues its commitment to public health, these initiatives highlight the collective efforts towards achieving widespread vaccination coverage and reinforcing the community's resilience against COVID-19.
