The mission of our Orthopedic Services at Vihiga County Referral Hospital is centered on delivering swift and effective patient management, striving for reduced hospitalization periods. Our specialized orthopedic unit is dedicated to providing unparalleled care, utilizing durable implants of the highest quality. We address a spectrum of trauma cases, including:
Fractures of both long and short bones are managed through conservative or operative methods.
- Pelvic fractures.
- Acetabular fractures.
- Dislocation of peripheral joints.
Orthopedic Team:
Our collaborative orthopedic team synergizes with the plastic surgical team to address fractures accompanied by wounds, with a shared goal of optimizing patient outcomes. Moreover, we work closely with the oncology team to surgically manage bone tumors like osteosarcomas and Ewings Sarcoma. For cases unresponsive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy or those with a chance of cure, our current management involves procedures such as amputation above the tumor levels or joint disarticulation.
Orthopedic Services:

- Arthroplasty of the hip and knee, covering both primary and revision surgery.
- Knee and shoulder arthroscopy.
- Management of joint and bone infections.
- Various ligament repairs, with a particular focus on the knee and shoulder.
- Pediatric long bone osteotomies.

Anticipating growth, we have aspirations to establish additional specialized units, including:
- Pediatric Orthopedic Unit.
- Arthroplasty Unit, catering to both primary and revision joint cases.
- Arthroscopy Unit.
- Bone Tumors (Cancer) Unit.
- Hand Surgery Unit.
- Spine Surgery Unit.
- Pelvic and Acetabular Unit.
Training Initiatives:
In the future, Vihiga County Referral Hospital is committed to contributing to the training of orthopedic surgeons. We aim to offer distinctive programs such as Cosecsa in orthopedics and MMED in orthopedics, fostering enhanced expertise in orthopedic and trauma management within our region.
