In a crucial advancement for women's health, Vihiga County Referral Hospital, in collaboration with the Fistula Foundation, has introduced a Free Fistula Repair initiative. This initiative promises comprehensive and cost-free treatment for women suffering from fistulas in the County, propelling Kenya towards becoming a fistula-free nation.
With a commitment to promoting dignity and ensuring privacy, Dr. Vitalis Juma, the hospital's Medical Superintendent, ensures that fistula repair services are integrated seamlessly with other medical services. This integration aims to reduce stigma and protect the identities of those receiving treatment, fostering a supportive environment.
Fistulas often result from prolonged labor, surgical injuries, infections, and other pelvic complications. Affected women are urged to visit the hospital for screening and, if diagnosed, can benefit from monthly surgeries funded entirely by the Fistula Foundation.
Dr. Juma also highlights the initiative's comprehensive approach: patients receive not only free medical care but also a transport refund, eliminating any financial burden. This reflects the hospital's dedication to accessible, compassionate healthcare, allowing women to seek necessary treatment confidently and without cost.
